ASCAP vs BMI vs SESAC: Which PRO Should an Independent Artist Join?

Every time your song plays on radio, in a venue, on a livestream, or in a bar's playlist, a performance royalty is generated. You cannot collect it yourself — no venue is mailing you a check. Performance rights organizations (PROs) exist to collect those royalties and pay the writers.

Not being registered with one is the single most common royalty leak we see. The money is still generated; it just never reaches you, and after a few years unclaimed royalties are typically redistributed to everyone else.

The three US PROs, briefly

• ASCAP — member-owned, open to any writer, one-time registration fee. Large repertory, quarterly-ish payment cycles.

• BMI — the largest by repertory size, historically free or low-cost for writers to join. Comparable collection reach.

• SESAC — invitation-only. You don't apply; they come to you. For most independent artists it's not the available choice.

For an independent writer choosing today, the honest answer is: ASCAP and BMI are far more alike than different. Both collect from the same licensed venues, stations, and platforms. Payment formulas differ at the margins, but no formula pays you anything if you're not registered at all — so the costly mistake isn't picking the "wrong" one, it's picking none.

The rules that actually matter

• One PRO per writer. You affiliate as a writer with exactly one. Co-writers can be with different PROs — that's what split sheets and IPI numbers are for (what's a split sheet?).

• Register the songs, not just yourself. Joining is step one; each song must be registered with your share. An affiliated writer with unregistered songs still leaks.

• Writer share vs publisher share. PROs split each royalty into halves. Without a publishing entity, make sure your registration is set up so you collect both halves you're entitled to — this is a classic silent leak.

• PROs don't collect mechanicals. Streaming mechanical royalties in the US route through The MLC — a separate free registration, and a separate leak if skipped.
