"We'll mail you a check" ages badly when there's no paper trail. An invoice changes the physics of getting paid: it turns your fee from a conversation into a document with a number, a date, and a balance due — the format bookkeepers are literally paid to process.

What goes on it

• Invoice number and date — bookkeeping systems want both; give them both.

• Who's billing whom — your name (or band/LLC) and contact, and the venue or client's full name.

• What was performed — date, venue, engagement ("live performance, two 45-minute sets").

• The money math — agreed fee, any deposit already received as a line item, and balance due in bold. Deposits vanish from memory; invoices remember them.

• Payment terms — due on receipt for gig-night settlements; net-14 or net-30 for corporate and private clients who process payables.

• How to pay — the fewer steps to pay you, the sooner you're paid.

When to send it

For bar gigs: bring it to the show, settle that night — pairs naturally with a settlement one-pager when there's a door deal. For weddings and privates: invoice for the deposit at booking and the balance ahead of the date, matching your agreement's terms. For corporate: ask who receives invoices *before* the gig — finding the accounts-payable inbox afterward is how net-30 becomes net-90.
