Nobody books a band they can't picture in their room. The gap between open mics and paid gigs is exactly that picture — and you can build it deliberately in about ninety days, if you treat every performance as evidence-gathering instead of just stage time.

Days 1–30: Collect proof

Play everything free you can get — open mics, showcases, a friend's backyard. But leave every one holding assets:

• Live footage — one phone on a tripod. You need 60 usable seconds, not a concert film.

• Photos — three good live shots beat thirty bad ones.

• Contacts — the host's name, the sound person's name, and every person who said "you were great" captured on your fan list — a QR code at your merch-less merch table works even when there's nothing to sell.

By day 30: a press kit exists — bio, photos, that footage, links. Imperfect is fine; *existing* is the bar most local acts never clear.

Days 31–60: Graduate to booked-but-unpaid

Target the rooms one rung up: booked showcase nights, support slots, café residencies. These are auditions for the room itself — the booker is watching whether you start on time, keep a set tight, and bring anyone. Bring anyone: your fan list is small but it's *local*, and fifteen people who came because you emailed them is a draw story no other local act at your level can tell.

By day 60: three booked performances logged in gigs, footage upgraded, list at 30+ names.

Days 61–90: Ask for money

Now the booking email writes itself, because every line is true: real rooms played, real numbers drawn, press kit one click away. Ask for weeknight slots with a modest guarantee or a door deal, know your cost floor so you don't quote below it, and confirm terms in writing.
